Christian Albarracín is a Colombian artist born in Bogotá in 1984. He creates three-dimensional compositions through the use of paper, utilizing a self-taught technique researched over 8 years on the composition of paper such as grammage, texture and durability. Through the use of these techniques, he creates works from 30 cm to 2 meters high, which are exposed to water and to the natural environment in order to maintain the resistance and durability of the works over time.
Regarding the use of paper in his work, Albarracin says, “The material is so thin, brittle and malleable, its fine composition makes it a challenging and highly malleable material. The paper is a support, or a receiver of artistic material, and acts as its own composer of a work of art. Many have experimented with it, and since it is not associated with a classic technique, the truth is that the practical demand that it implies makes it a noble and complex material in sculpture format. Currently I have developed my own research in my three dimensional compositions thus achieving something unique and differentiating from other artists who work with this material.”
Albarracin’s work with their backs came out in the time of COVID where we all had our faces hidden in a certain way through mask-wearing. We could not recognize each other and that there was little to no interaction between us and that distance that was already latent in the city was stronger among the subjects that inhabit it
